Staying motivated can be difficult at times; especially when we have hit way too many roadblocks on our way to achieving a desired goal. However, we must remind ourselves every day that success in not a linear path and it is full of twists, turns, and even dead ends in which we have to lay out an alternate route to continue moving forward. In fact, I argue that the path of failure is linear, the easiest to take, goes on in one direction and it virtually takes no effort to fail whatsoever to stay on it.
I found in my personal experience that the best way to stay on track and not fall of course whenever you feel overwhelmed is to always keep your goal in your mind’s eye. This means you that must literally see the goal in your mind and constantly remind yourself why you are doing what it, why you must achieve it, and how much better your life would be when you do.
The most important part of seeing it in your mind’s eye is actually pretending to be in the future when you have already accomplished your goal. We do this plenty of times throughout the day; take for example, when we are deciding which kinds of foods to eat: Do we not imagine what it would be like to eat the food we want to eat before we eat it and then decide that is what we want to eat after imagining how we would feel after we actually did? That’s precisely what we do and how we make decisions
Deciding what to eat and eating it is a very small goal which can be accomplished with virtually no problems; unless you’re in a situation such as Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. But achieving a long term goal, such as losing weight, is done via the same decision-making process but the gratification and results are not instant. When a goal is spread over a long period of time, chances are you will run into a streak of bad luck or challenges that rarely occur with a short term goal. Many of us can deal with one or two problems every so often, but what happens when we are hit with a barrage negative things which almost beat us down to the point we want to give up?
This is where we have to have train ourselves to shut off all the negative thoughts, bring out the correct mindset, and decide to keep moving forward. You have to realize that your strength is not being put to the test when thing are going well, but only when things are not going well. Instead of getting down and upset about the inevitable resistance you will face along your path to success, look at all your so-called problems as new goals to achieve. If you were to look at them as another obstacle to conquer on a course which is on the path towards your goal, you will realize that this comes with the territory of being a successful person because the road to success is full of such obstacles for you to overcome.
With each challenge you beat, think of it as you growing stronger and coming closer to your goal. This is no mind trick by the way, because with every one you do conquer, the closer you do come to your goal and the stronger you do become. Why? Because success is not measured by how many obstacles/challenges one is unable to overcome, but rather, how many one is able to overcome. Success is achieved when someone fully completes a given task the best they can.
So when you are feeling down and want to give up, remember that being a winner is a choice and it is up to you to setup what goals you want to accomplish; at your own pace and up to your own standards. You do not need to compete with others or even win competitions to be successful; all you have to do is be the best you can be and beat your former self so you can put yourself in a better place than you were before.
